What makes the Advanced Social Work Practice at Worcester special?

The Postgraduate Certificate course has been written to meet the Practice Educator Professional Standards for Social Work. The programme will enable you to support and assess social work students on placement and enhance your leadership skills. You will develop your knowledge alongside your employment and be provided with evidence to meet the continuing professional development requirements from the regulator . 

The course provides a continuous professional development framework for social care professionals. Graduates from this programme will be highly competitive candidates for further postgraduate study at MSc, MPhil and PhD level.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to be registered social workers.

The Assessed and Supported Year in Employment module will recruit directly from local authority partners. For the Practice Educator Professional Standards Stage 1 (PEPS 1) and Practice Educator Professional Standards Stage 2 (PEPS 2) modules, applicants will require 2 full years post qualifying experience in social work prior to the start of the course and demonstrate that they are practising at BASW (2018) PCF .

Admissions/selection criteria

The applicant will be offered a place when a member of the course team confirm they meet all the criteria for entry.  For the Practice Educator Professional Standards Stage 1 (PEPS 1) and Practice Educator Professional Standards Stage 2 (PEPS 2) modules, applicants will need to liaise with partner organisations to enable them to support, supervise and assess a student social worker.

Applicants will need support from their employer as the modules wills involves the applicant supporting a student social worker whilst on placement and assessments from their employers. 

Recognition of Prior Learning

Admissions policy

  • All applications will be via email to the admissions tutor
  • The admissions tutor will ensure entry requirements are met by review of the application form, if necessary asking for supplementary information
  • Applicants will require a reference, usually from their employer, and will need to have full responsibility for supporting, supervising and assessing 2 students throughout the Practice Educator Professional Standards Stage 1 (PEPS 1) and  Practice Educator Professional Standards Stage 2 (PEPS 2)

Course content

To complete the PG Cert in Advanced Social Work Practice you will need to complete all 4 mandatory modules.  However, if you only wish to complete the Practice Educator modules you can exit with a Postgraduate Award in Professional Development: Social Work Practice Education.

Our courses are informed by research and current developments in the discipline and by feedback from students, external examiners and employers. Modules do therefore change periodically in the interests of keeping the course relevant and reflecting best practice. The most up-to-date information will be available to you once you have accepted a place and registered for the course.  If there are insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, this might not be offered, but we will advise you as soon as possible and help you choose an alternative.

Teaching and assessment

The University places emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement. A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support from and , and also the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will help you to flourish and be successful.   

Teaching

Recognising that you are likely to be studying alongside social work practice you will engage in blended learning methods. You will be taught through a combination of interactive workshops, lectures, seminars and online sessions. Throughout the programme, you will benefit from an integration of both innovative and traditional teaching methods. Your learning will be supported by the University’s virtual learning environment. You will have individual access to electronic journals, content-rich study guides, and interactive online learning materials formative online assessments and group discussion forums. 

The Assessed and Supported Year in Employment module consists of learning opportunities through a variety of methods such as workshops and peer supervision sessions delivered by your employer which will enable you to benefit from content which is specific to your role in your organisation. Alongside this the University provides an interactive workshop focused on reflection and bringing together your learning during your first year in practice. You will also benefit from flexible academic tutorial support.

For the Practice Educator modules you will be working alongside social work students and you will be assessed by an experienced Practice Educator qualified at Stage 2 of the Practice Educator Professional Standards for Social Work, Practice Educator mentor or assessor . Your Practice Educator mentor or assessor will be allocated by your employer.

online portfolios are used to give you the opportunity to evidence your competencies. You will complete reflective essays, allowing you to evaluate and analysis your social work practice.

Contact time

The Assessed and Support Year in Practice 15 credit module will have varying contact time depending on your employers programme of delivery. This will include a half day workshop delivered by the university.

For the Practice Educator module 15 credit modules there will be 4 days of teaching and 12 hours of 1 hour online seminars.

The Practice Leadership for Strength based Practice 15 credit module will consist of 3 days teaching and 6 hours of online seminars.

In a typical week you will have around 2-6 contact hours of teaching. 

  • 2 hours of interactive workshops
  • 1 hour of virtual learning

We anticipate you will be studying in groups of around 20

Independent study

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake 6-8 hours of personal self-study per week. Typically, this will involve completing online activities, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library and online, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for assessments.

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including The Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources. 

Duration

This is a part time programme. You need to have 2 years of post-qualifying experience before starting the Practice Educator Professional Standards for Social Work modules (PEPS) (). We anticipate completion taking 3.5 years.

Timetables

Timetables are normally available one month before registration. Please note that whilst we try to be as student friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week; and some classes can be scheduled in the evenings.

Teaching staff

You will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the course. Our Social Work team is made up of senior academics, professional practitioners with extensive experience. The team includes staff who are internationally recognised. Teaching is informed by research and consultancy, and 100% per cent of University lecturers have a higher education teaching qualification or are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. Assessment

The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or ‘formative’ assignments. 

Each module has one or more formal or ‘summative’ assessments which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.  Assessment methods include essays, reports, presentations and portfolios.

Pebblepad online portfolios are used to give you the opportunity to evidence your competencies. You will complete reflective essays, allowing you to evaluate and analysis your social work practice.

You will receive feedback on practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. Feedback is intended to support learning and you are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors as appropriate. 

We aim to provide you with feedback on formal course work assessments within 20 working days of hand-in.

Diane Asamoah

Diane is the course leader for the Social Work Continuous Professional Development programs. She currently lectures on the BA(Hons) Practice Realities module, MA Complex practice, supporting students to prepare for Social Work employment, PEPS 2 and Practice Leadership for Strength Based Practice.

She looks forward to supporting students with an understanding of the skills needed for current Social Work practice.

Kay Wall

Kay's passion is working with, and for, adults and children who have offended, in particular giving them a voice. She has a keen interest in the needs of service personnel and in particular discharges from the military.

Kay is a part-time tutor at the University, which allows her to continue to work alongside young people attending the Youth Justice Service and supervise students in the workplace as a practice educator.

Part-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard tuition fees for part-time home and EU students enrolling on MA/MSc/MBA/MRes/PGCert/PGDip courses in the academic year 2025/26 are £788 per 15-credit module, £1,575 per 30-credit module, £2,363 per 45-credit module, and £3,150 per 60 credit module.
