Professor Hong is a Molecular Plant Virologist who obtained his BSc in Microbiology (1984), MSc in Microbial Genetics (1987), and PhD in Molecular Plant Virology (1990). He has continually worked on virus-host interactions aiming to develop novel strategies for plant and crop protection over 30 years of his research career. Professor Hong has also intensively explored frontiers in mobile RNA silencing in plant defence; RNA signalling in flowering; genetics and epigenetics of fruit ripening, seed development and vivipary, leaf architecture and photosynthesis; small RNA technology and plant virus-based platforms for functional genomics and crop improvement; RNA imagining; structural biology; plant biotechnology; molecular pharming of pharmaceuticals and development of edible vaccines for human diseases in plants. His research activities and outcomes are linked to sustainable agriculture and food security, crop improvement and biotechnology, synthetic biology, systems approach, functional data-driven plant and crop genomics, and novel technology for omics.

His research activities have led to publications of more than 100 research articles. Some of his scientific discoveries have received highlight, commentary or journal covers. His works have also generated applications for 12 patents, 3 of which were licensed to international biotech companies. He has edited and published 3 books with Humana/Elsevier.

Professor Hong is interested in research-led teaching that is closely associated with his scientific activities.

Teaching Interests

Professor Hong’s teaching interests are led by his research activities which cover molecular plant virology, mobile RNA silencing in host innate defence, small RNAs and virus-based technology, RNA signalling in flowering, epigenetic modulation of fruit and seed development via microRNA and DNA methylation and demethylation. Professor Hong is currently involved in teaching a PG module and supervising MSc and PhD students.

Research Interests

Professor Hong has been working on virus-host interactions aiming to develop novel strategies for plant and crop protection. He has also intensively studied mobile RNA silencing in plant defence; RNA signalling in flowering; genetics and epigenetics of fruit ripening, seed development and vivipary, leaf architecture and photosynthesis; RNA imagining; structural biology; plant biotechnology; molecular pharming of pharmaceuticals and development of edible vaccines for human diseases in plants. These diverse research fields are anchored by a common molecular theme of signal transduction such as mobile RNA/protein and calcium signalling. He pioneered small RNA technology and plant virus-based platforms for functional genomics and crop improvement. His research activities and outcomes are linked to sustainable agriculture and food security, crop improvement and biotechnology, synthetic biology, systems approach, functional data-driven plant and crop genomics, and novel technology for omics.
