Hayley is a part-time PhD History student within the School of Humanities at the ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥. 

Hayley’s main research interest is Twentieth-Century Social and Emotional History. Her PhD research concerns how couples both built and maintain their relationships through the written word during the First and Second World Wars.  Hayley is following an apprenticeship model of post-graduate studentship and has been involved in a number of other activities to support her career development.

Conference Presentation Papers

Women’s History Network Annual Conference held at Leeds Trinity University in September 2016. Title: ‘Love stories: Love and life in World War One: Letters in Worcestershire.’ Hayley was awarded a bursary by the WHN to cover her conference fees.

The Women’s History Network Remembering the World War One Home Front in the Midlands, Conference in March 2017 held at the Carpet Museum, Kidderminster. Title: ‘You love him but what are you doing for him?’ A woman’s caring war work.

The Midlands History Postgraduate Conference in November 2017. Title: “Each time I receive a letter from you I develop a strange thumping sensation around the region of my heart for which there can only be one explanation! – its love, pure and simple.” Love by letter, during World War Two.’

The Women's History Network Conference held at the Black Country Living museum, April 2018. Title: ‘Women’s wartime relationships as revealed through the written word.’

Legacies of the First World War Festival: Women and War. ‘Early Career Researchers and Community Engagement – The Future.’ Held at The Women’s Library, Glasgow.

Public Engagement

As well as working with various local community projects Hayley has submitted and won first prize for the Judges Choice Award for the Images of Research competition 2019. She has also researched, written and presented a film in association with . In addition to this, Hayley has researched, written and recorded three themed podcasts on Letters in First World War again in connection with History West Midlands:
